Porsche 356 Coupe….takes all kids….wouldn’t personally paint my Porsche this color – but the attraction this car generated was crazy! Janice Joplin had a very similar car. European Central would title this: Janis Joplin Tribute Car 🙂 A little Tuesday morning trivia…
Joplin bought the Porsche in 1968. She had it painted, from bumper to bumper and door to door, in a mural: landscapes, birds, butterflies, floating eyes, mushrooms and skull-like faces.
Celebrity ownership doesn’t ordinarily add much value to a car. But the price of this one far exceeded what it would otherwise have fetched. In fact, this was the highest price ever paid for any Porsche 356 at auction $1.76 million.
The previous record was $1.5 million, paid for a 1956 Porsche 356A GS Carrera Speedster in August 2013, according to Hagerty Insurance, which insures collector cars. That particularly rare and desirable sports car had a racing history, was believed to have been driven only 20,000 miles and had been meticulously restored. For a 1964 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet like Joplin’s, the top auction price until this sale was $341,000, a record set in May of last year
Joplin’s car beat those records because it was so closely identified with her. She drove it a lot. Fans would leave her notes tucked under the windshield wipers.
Have a good day! 🙂
